Biography

Born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1955, Ricardo Leonard served 4 years in the US Army as a Specialist 4. In 2018, Ricardo was elected Vice President of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRP-MIC), having previously served as a Council Member, 2000-2018. With the Salt River Veterans group (WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans), Ricardo helped establish The American Legion Bushmasters Post 114; he served three years as Post Commander. Post 114 was the first American Legion Post to request a flag flown over the USS Arizona, thus beginning the effort to create the USS ARIZONA Memorial Gardens at Salt River, which honors all who served and gave their lives on the battleship. Through Ricardo Leonard’s efforts, SRP-MIC is now designated as a Purple Heart Community, recognizing individuals who are Purple Heart Recipients.
