Biography | Born in Three Rivers, Texas in 1933, Simon “Marty” Martinez served in the U.S. Air Force, Arizona National Guard, Marine Corps motor transport, and the U.S. Navy SEABEES heavy equipment operation, retiring in 1974 with twenty-two years of service. Marty’s civilian career in the Yuma area included sixteen years as a heavy equipment operator for three government agencies. For forty years Marty, a longtime leader in The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans, has been a fighter for helping veterans in need: Marty co-founded the Yuma Veterans Helping Veterans organization which provides homeless veterans with benefits information, meals, clothing, and haircuts. In addition to working thousands of hours at the Crossroads Mission taking care of veterans, Marty has chaired many special events such as the American Legion Veterans Day Parade and Barbecue.
