AVHOF Induction

As you can see, it is an event full of excitement and an opportunity to participate in the induction of fourteen extraordinary veterans who will be joining you as members of the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame and your Society.

While Registration for the Induction has officially closed, I have it on good authority that a few seats are still available.  If you have not yet registered, please jump online right away and do so.  Call me directly of you have any problems registering:  480-363-0044.  And do not forget the Reception earlier that day.  Registration for the Reception opens at 0700 and the continental breakfast begins at 0730.  All Society members are invited.  I am looking forward to a large turnout of Society members.

We are working on two new programs:

VA Medical Center Recognition...
This program is intended to recognize and reward select workers at the VA medical center.  Specifics of the program are now being formulated by a committee consisting of Karen Craig, Pat Little-Upah, Peter Kloeber and Ron Perkins.  Please contact one of these committee members if you have suggestions or would like to participate in planning.  The intent is to launch this program in Phoenix, Prescott and Tucson in early 2023.

Veterans Home Outreach Program...
Christeen Verchot is heading up initial planning for this program which is initially defined as follows:

Proposal:  Develop a program to outreach to Veterans residing in the Arizona Veterans Home. At this moment, there are 73 men and 5 women. The average age is 65. Most of them have a memory loss issue.

Purpose: Provide a sense of comradery to those Veterans residing in the Arizona Veterans Home.

Plan:  Host events that will bring a sense of belonging as well as inform/update residents on Military Services
Sponsor Home Events (Bingo, Educational, Musical, etc.)
Sponsor Community Events (Ball games, Ballet, Renaissance Fair, etc.)
Sponsor Vets with no family or visitors
Provide items for Lending Closet

Our goal is to begin this program in early 2023 with the initial implementation at the Arizona State Veteran Home – Phoenix.  If the program is well received and successful, we would expand it to other Veteran Homes in the state.  Please contact Christeen with any suggestions you have.  I am sure she would be glad to have your input and participation.

As a last item, please mark your calendars for the Annual Business Meeting scheduled for January 11, 2023.  More details on this will be forthcoming over the next few months.

TREASURER’S NOTES
Jerry

Jerry Wojtas
AVHOFS Treasurer
Class of 2011

I’m putting out a call for someone in the Society to replace me as treasurer.  I’m doing this even though I’ve been elected to serve through all of 2023.  I’ve held this position for 8+ years and have enjoyed the involvement it brings with other members of the Society board.  Any change has to be approved by our Society president.

It doesn’t matter where you live in Arizona.  We bank with Chase and they are everywhere!  I would remain as Asst. Treasurer for as long as the new treasurer wanted me.  You should be familiar with Word and Excel or be willing to learn about both.  I was not familiar with either when I became treasurer but learned quickly.  And you don’t have to be involved on a daily basis.  I just returned from an 11 day trip to Europe and did not touch the records until I returned.  Everything was A-OK.

If you have an interest, but have questions about the job, contact me by phone, 623-544-4477 or email at jp7wojtas@gmail.com.  If I can do the job, then ANYONE can!  And by the way, if after a period of time you feel that it isn’t your cup of tea, I’ll take the job back!

One program that we haven’t promoted in a long while is one we have with Anytime Auto Glass.  If you or your neighbor has a windshield that needs replacing, call Anytime (480-430-4597) and arrange for them to replace your windshield.  Then give them our special code, AZVHOFS and they will send us a check for $100.  That is the easiest $100 donation to our Society you ever made!

And don’t forget our Century Club.

The US Department of Defense – USA Vietnam War Commemoration has contacted me and informed me that Phoenix and the surrounding area was selected to thank the Vietnam-era Veterans.

It will be 50 years since USA pulled out of Vietnam and they requested to have a major event in the Phoenix valley.

This will be held at the Mountain View Cemetery… March 25, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

We will have speakers, Veterans Heritage Project Students, Navy JROTC Color Guard; 6th Grade Patterson Elementary Students; US Army Field Band (Six-String Soldiers), Pinning Ceremony with the Dept of Defense USA Vietnam War Commemoration; Informational booths for Veterans; Free haircuts for Veterans; Military equipment; Wreaths Across America Educational Trailer; bands; Dunk Tank, food trucks and much more.

We are looking for sponsors to help with the expenses of this event.  If you become a sponsor, you will have your company’s logo on the local papers, magazines, social media and on our posters. We will also mention all the sponsors at the event.

If you would like to have a booth at this event, please contact me at veteranseventsaz@gmail.com for details.
