Fellow Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society members.
You will recall that the Board of Directors has gone dark for the months of July and August. Monthly BOD meetings will commence on 14 September. Even though the BOD is dark, the business of your Society continues. I offer the following updates:
Officers and Directors for 2023 – 2024:
Christine Mahon is chairing the Nomination Committee for new Board of Directors officers and directors to be nominated and elected in January 2023. All seats on the BOD are for two years. Directors leaving the BOD after their two-year term at the end of 2022 are Kathleen Laurier, Christine Mahon and Tom Sheets. Directors that took office in January 2022 and will remain in their seats through 2023 are Karen Craig, Peter Kloeber and Roy McClymonds. Officers completing their two-year terms in December are President Jim Monroe, Vice President Pat Little-Upah and Secretary Nancy Fassbender. Treasurer Jerry Wojtas was installed in 2022 and he will remain in office until December 2023. Considering this situation, the following seats will be open for nominations:
- President
- Vice President
- Secretary
- Director (Three seats)
The Nominating Committee will offer a slate of Officers and Directors for consideration in November. Additional nominations may be made until elections are held at the Annual Membership Meeting in January. In addition to these elected positions, we are aggressively seeking an Assistant Treasurer (back-up for Jerry Wojtas) and a Chaplain. The specifics of each office can be found in the Society Website/Guiding Documents/Bylaws.
Please give thought to these available positions. The Society is entering a time in which a number of new opportunities are surfacing; it is a time we can make a significant difference.

2022 AVHOF Class Induction:
We are all interested in this year’s Induction. Lea Seago, UAV Chairman, has submitted information on this important event and you will find it here in this issue of the Patriot. The UAV does an excellent job of producing the Induction Lunch/Ceremony and the Talking Stick Resort is an excellent venue. I hope to see a great many Society members there on 14 October.
2023 Patriotic Awards Luncheon:
You may think we are very early in notifying you of the next PAL. We have begun work on the event and Karen Craig has graciously agreed to serve as Chairman. An Agreement is in place with DoubleTree Resort in Scottsdale to present the PAL there on April 28, 2023. This will be a luncheon as it was this year. You will hear much more about this fabulous event in the months to come.
Copper Sword and Copper Eagle Awards:
Pat Little-Upah is heading up the Copper Sword and Copper Eagle selections for 2023. Plans are being put in place to offer two Copper Eagle Awards, one for businesses and one for organizations. It has become apparent over the last few years that we need to separate the Copper Eagle award into these two categories to fairly recognize deserving candidates. More to come.
Scholarships:
We will once again be offering three scholarships to VHP Graduating Students who are continuing their education. Working with VHP is such a pleasure and I am constantly surprised with the quality and dedication of the scholarship winners.
We are actively looking at the opportunity to offer two or possibly three Veteran scholarships in 2023. While plans for this change are not yet complete, we are actively moving forward and hope to provide more Veteran Scholarships in years to come.
New Activities / Society Programs:
We have several small committees that are researching new programs for the Society. There are certainly new opportunities to support the Veteran community and we must move forward in doing more. If you have any ideas for activities that the Society might initiate, please call me for discussion. |

This service includes helping veterans with disabilities, raising money for scholarships and veteran programs, service for community hospitals, churches, museums and much, much more.
After induction the class is automatically included in Society membership. The AVHOF is the only avenue to become part of your organization. So, please plan to attend the ceremony on 14 October to celebrate your new members, the Class of 2022.

ALEXANDER WHITE (Class of 2014)
Alexander Bialywlos White, M.D. passed away peacefully on July 18, 2022, in his 100th year, at home in Scottsdale, Arizona, surrounded by his wife and children. He was born June 4, 1923, in Krosno, Poland. The only member of his family of six to survive the Holocaust, he was, toward the end of the War, part of the famous Schindler’s List (#269). He lived the advice of his father whose last words to him were, before being gassed, “If you survive and I hope you do, be a mensch,” which means a good human being. After being liberated on the last day of the War in Europe, May 8, 1945, Alex became a refugee in the American zone near Munich, Germany, where he went to medical school. He emigrated to the United States in 1950, got married, joined the army, became a citizen, and practiced medicine, mostly in the Chicago area for close to 50 years before retiring to Arizona. He also taught at the Chicago Medical School (now Rosalind Franklin University), and became a Holocaust educator, speaking about his experiences not only in the United States but in Germany and his hometown of Krosno – and during the pandemic, over zoom. He titled his memoirs, Be a Mensch. A proud veteran, he was elected to the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame. He will be deeply, deeply missed, not only for his humanity, integrity, and acceptance, but his unique sense of humor and fun, and his memory: what a memory! He had a great desire to live. He continued to keep up with the medical field, and even went to the gym up to the week before he died. He is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, Inez, and his children Denise, Les, and Julie White-North (Jay), and the thousands who heard him speak. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Arizona Jewish Historical Society (AZJHS), 122 East Culver Street, Phoenix, Arizona, 85004 or Hospice of the Valley. Videos of his speaking can be found on the AZJHS webpage and on YouTube. Photo taken January 19, 2019, at Steven Geiger’s Mensch International Foundation
