Biography

Born in Muskegon, Michigan in 1947. He enlisted in the Army in 1967 and served tours in Panama and Vietnam, leaving active duty in 1970. In 1978, Vern re-entered military service with the 108th Army Band of the Arizona National Guard. In 2006, he left his job at CAVCO homes, where he had worked for 21 years, to enter active duty with the Guard to perform Military Funeral Honors. During his time with the Honor Guard, Vern played Taps over 3000 times and since retiring in 2009, has performed Taps an additional 3100 times. In addition to his performing at veterans and patriotic programs, Vern has volunteered one day a week with his church’s outreach program provided for neighborhood children where he passes on his musical talents.
