Biography

(1918-2002) Born in Tempe, Arizona, in 1918. Served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Tour of service included supporting forces for many of the Pacific island invasions, including Iwo Jima. Following military service, became active in many Phoenix charitable activities, concentrating especially on the Special Olympics and the treatment of handicapped children. Former commander of the Arizona Department of the American Legion. Served as Children and Youth Commission Chairman at Department level for 27 years and as a member of the national commission for 25 years starting in 1951 when elected chairman of the western states commission. Oversaw disbursement of over one million dollars to financially stressed veterans as administrator of Legion Temporary Financial Assistance Program for 27 years. Instrumental in establishing the Arizona State Veterans Home. Strong proponent of the Constitutional Amendment to protect the Flag. Major contributor to the Ira Hayes memorial service at the State Capitol. Continues support of many veterans’ organizations and associates.
